Neonatololgy
NICU 548
Prerequisite: Internal Medicine Clerkship
Location: University of Maryland Hospital
Description and Goals:
The goal of a rotation in neonatology is to allow the student to learn the fundamentals of fetal pathophysiology and aid in understanding the total care of the normal newborn, the problems of the sick and immature newborn, and current methods of treatment. During the rotation, the student will serve as primary caretaker of one to two sick newborns at a time in the NICU, under close supervision, allowing students to gain first-hand knowledge of neonatal disease and acquire skills for procedures and resuscitation. During this rotation, students will receive both bedside and didactic teaching of neonatology in the nursery. At the end of the rotation, the student will be expected to prepare a discussion on an area of neonatal medicine that interests the student. Subintern will take call every fourth night with a third year resident. During the rotation, Dr. Gladstein, Sub-I Director, meets with all Sub-I's every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in his office for case conference.
