Amish Studies

The Old Order Amish (OOA) population of Lancaster County, PA immigrated to the United States from Western Europe in the late 1700’s. There are now approximately 30,000 OOA individuals in the Lancaster area, nearly all of whom can trace their ancestry back 12-14 generations to a small number of founder families. The Amish have large sibships, a high degree of consanguinity, well-documented genealogies, and a predominantly rural lifestyle. These features make this population attractive for genetic analysis.
